What is Backscatter ?
More and more people are suffering from having their domains forged as the “from” address in spam runs.
The results of this include :
- Irate messages from recipients directed at the sender (which may be a legitimate email address on your system)
- Complaints to postmaster or abuse at your domain
- Larts to your ISP
Whilst these are a nuisance they are usually manageable.
The real problem comes from :
- DSN (Delivery Status Notification) advising that the message cannot be delivered - or that delivery is delayed
- Auto-acks - often advising that the mailbox is no longer in use due to spam
- Rejections advising that a message has been caught by a spamblock or is blocked for some similar reason
- C/R systems (Challenge/Response) requesting that you confirm you sent the message
These have been given the name of Backscatter.
In a nutshell, Backscatter is a message you receive advising that an email you did not send was not delivered to someone you do not know.
