backscatterers.com
is a resource for listing domains that are a source of backscatter because :
- they refuse or can’t be bothered to configure their mail server to reject during the SMTP session
- they generate irrelevant auto-acknowledgements
- utilise Challenge / Response systems
We have over 100 domains and on an average day we receive thousands of false bounces. Many of these are filtered or rejected on reception but we have purposefully set the system to accept the bounces on some domains so that we can monitor the problem.
Postmasters and abuse desks at offending domains are notified of the backscatter along with some links on how to correct the problem. One interesting statistic of these reports is the number of returned mails due to them not having a valid Postmaster or Abuse address, in fact many appear to have no valid contact address.
We endeavour to check and report to RFC-ignorant.org but we also plan to publish a sister site, nopostmaster.com, generated from the resultant data.
